Convenience of use

The KitchenAid juicer tickles our curiosity. This is the first accessory for a food processor that we have properly tested in our laboratory. At first glance, the 5KSM1JA is inevitably more compact than its competitors. The base of the classic extractor disappears and only the upper part remains, ie the bowl and the slide. Proof of this are its reduced dimensions: width 17.8 cm, height 29.5 cm and depth 24.6 cm.

To last this point: no engine block is supplied with the device. Only the training module takes place in a box and is mounted on the front of the KitchenAid stand mixer. It is then the robot motor that controls the juicer. Once again, don’t forget that three models are compatible with the 5KSM1JA: the Artisan 4.8 L and Mini 3.3 L, which we tested, as well as the Classic 4.3 L.

If the hood is stowable, it does not forget the many parts necessary for grinding food. The bulk of the equipment consists of a juice bowl, a slide and a tray that help the fruit slide down the auger. A basket and filter must be installed inside the bowl. The user has a choice between three different sieves to keep more or less of the pulp in the juice; one of them can even make coulis and purees. By comparison, the Philips Viva Collection HR1889 / 70 has only one. KitchenAid also provides a box with a lid to store two unused filters and prevent them from being misplaced. And last but not least, the endless screw. The blade attached to it pre-cuts the food before entering the grinding phase. It is also the first device equipped in this way that we are testing.

Before operating the hood, assemble the parts and attach the lid; be sure to close it until it “clicks”. The device is well attached to the food processor, which we switch on at maximum speed (speed 10). Since the extractor is controlled by robot commands, keep in mind that no “reversal” option is possible with this model; useful option for certain links such as Moulinex Ultra Juice ZU600110. Finally, we will not forget to place two containers under 5KSM1JA. In this regard, KitchenAid provided two 1 liter containers; The juice has a silicone lid for better preservation of the drink after crushing.

Performance

We washed and sliced ​​the food, now it’s time for juice! Before starting, the user must push the pulp chute towards the device; if it is pulled outwards, the fibers will not be able to be pulled out.

The manufacturer supplies a tray that is useful and makes it easier to load fruit and vegetables. The slide is not the widest in our comparison, but it allows for the smooth introduction of food. Some, such as the Ninja JC100EU, caused problems and we had to slice the carrots in order to swallow them. KitchenAid also supplies a slider to speed up the process.

It’s an apple test that opens the ball. About 200 g of fruit (exactly 211 g) is about to be grinded on the machine, including the skins and seeds. From the first quarter to the end of crushing, it took only 37 seconds for 5KSM1JA to swallow everything; current record. At the end of the process, we obtained 147 g of juice, which is equivalent to 69.7% of the original total weight; which is a very decent performance.

192.5 g of carrots come next. KitchenAid is still one of the fastest in our comparison. It is also one of the most efficient: 44.8% efficiency, compared to 26.6% for the Philips Viva Collection HR1889 / 70, for example. However, he is one of the only ones to see his engine wrestling during grinding. When a large amount of carrot reaches the snail, the robot slows down significantly. In his defense, it is one of the strongest foods he must grind. In addition, we find a little more than 9 g of pulp in the juice; in comparison, the two worst devices in our comparison reached more than 12 g.

If the engine manages to keep up the pace during the orange test, the problem is the amount of fiber left after crushing. The blade retains the flesh, which breaks between the tray and the lid. 5KSM1JA then obtains a yield of 58.8%, while Riviera-et-Bar PEJ 730 reaches 65.3%.

We are now trying to put herbs, in this case parsley, in the juicer. From 50.1 g of parsley we obtain 12.3 g of juice; which means a yield of 24.5%. Only Philips Viva Collection HR1889 / 70 (20.1%) is doing less well; Moulinex Ultra Juice ZU600110 achieves a yield of 52.8%. No sprig of parsley was found at the end of grinding. The juice, on the other hand, is particularly thick; amazing texture compared to KitchenAid competition.

Finally, we will try to make our own almond milk. Therefore, soak 35 g of almonds in 500 ml of water overnight. The next day we pass everything to the extractor. Still the same fast (25 s) 5KSM1JA achieves an efficiency of 90.8%. However, it leaves 26.3 g of residue in the juice, which is not the most pleasant in the mouth.

Maintenance

Maintenance is often the curse of juicers. With many of their parts (7 for KitchenAid), they become a real headache. As with the vast majority of its competitors, the 5KSM1JA comes with a brush to make it easier to clean and remove debris from the corners of the device.

Once the grinding is done, we disassemble the extractor and find the fibers stuck here and there in the tank and sieve. Also, if the blade prevents fruits and vegetables from jamming by pre-cutting them, it inevitably requires more maintenance than equipment that does not. Pieces of food are jammed on this blade without being able to continue on their way to the endless screw.

A basket that scratches the sides of the bowl and throws the drink towards the outlet does not do its job properly. Then a certain amount of juice remains stored at the bottom of the bowl without it being able to flow into the collection bowl. When the tank is disconnected from the drive module, it happens that this juice flows into the work surface.

Finally, the device also provides a stop-drip system. Paradox: it doesn’t stop any drop. The plastic ball should normally block the juice channel, but in fact a small puddle of juice will form after use under the device.
