The circuits in the F1 2022 season parade, but the candidates for pole position are always the same. Before qualifying, the favorites were Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz, Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez.

Ferrari’s Monachan did not make a mistake in Friday’s practice and won Free 1 and Free 2. In the third practice of the weekend, Sergio Pérez climbed to the top of the standings just before Ferrari.

Saturday morning’s training was marked by several incidents on the track, when Carlos Sainz blocked Sebastian Vettel and Pérez blocked George Russell. The Spaniard escaped the sanction after the stewards decided that Ferrari had given him the wrong information. The team was fined 25,000 euros.

In addition to the duel between Ferrari and Red Bull, a duel between Mercedes F1 and McLaren was also expected in this qualification. Alfa Romeo F1 and AlphaTauri also appeared in free practice 3.

Q1 – 18 minutes

Mick Schumacher signed the first benchmark for 1’16 “997, 0” 064 in front of his teammate Kevin Magnussen. Lando Norris set the best time of 1: 15,800, just ahead of Valtteri Bottas, who failed at 0.056.

Mercedes drivers then took control, Lewis Hamilton in 1’15 “391, far ahead of Russell, who missed his first lap and complained of lack of grip. Perez set a true qualifying standard in 1’14” 369 and Verstappen defeated him in 1 ’14 “295 as Ferrari raced on.

Pierre Gasly finished third and Leclerc moved up to third place after experiencing traffic at the end of the round. Kevin Magnussen even placed ahead of Monaco.

Esteban Ocon set the third fastest time, ahead of Fernando Alonso by 1’14 “148. Norris set the second fastest time 0.044 behind the Spaniard Alpine and the Red Bulls were still on the track.

Pérez took the lead in 1’13 “292 and Verstappen was just over a tenth behind. Sainz equalized Pérez’s time to second place. Leclerc complained that he was too out of turn for the other riders, be embarrassed.

Gasly improved and moved up to fourth place and Leclerc was improving. The fastest time was set by Monačan in 1’12,939. Ocon and Alonso improved, and the Spaniard got ahead of Verstappen in the standings.

Verstappen improved to 0.054 behind Leclerc as Ricciardo climbed back to the top 10. Hamilton moved up to fifth place and Leclerc improved despite the limit pass in the final turn at 1’12,569. Sainz is in second place with 0.047.

Perez gradually improved, as did Schumacher, who moved up to seventh place. Albon set an excellent time and finished eighth before Magnussen improved and moved up to fifth. Latifi improved to 16th place, but it was not enough for a temporary advance to Q2.

Bottas moved up to ninth place, Russell was third, but Zhou did not improve. The red flag was waved for no particular reason. Tsunoda struck New Chicane lightly, and the race management apparently wanted to check the condition of the tracks.

When the session resumed, at 16:20 local time, there were 2 minutes 25 hours left.

Many riders came out and we saw riders Williams, McLaren, AlphaTauri, Aston Martin and Alpine trying to get another time.

Latifi improved, but did not move in the pecking order. Vettel finished seventh, Alonso eighth, Norris fourth and Ricciardo ninth. Ocon finished fourth.

The eliminators are Albon, Gasly, Stroll, Latifi and Zhou. The frustration was huge for Gasly, who missed the last attempt in tenths of a second.

2nd quarter – 15 minutes

Verstappen quickly set the scale at 1’12 “551, but was defeated by Sainz at 1’12” 074 before Perez agreed at 1’12 “059.

Leclerc set the third fastest time just 0.033 behind Pérez! Norris finished fifth ahead of Vettel, Tsunoda and Ricciard. Bottas moved up to seventh place as Mercedes drivers warmed up the tires in two wheels.

Hamilton finished fifth and Russell seventh, with both men facing Norris. Alonso placed fifth out of the rest before Norris regained the position. Ocon set the ninth fastest time.

Bottas improved, but remained 12th as Ferrari and the Red Bulls returned to the track for a fast lap. Verstappen improved to 1’12,353, but remained fourth. Sainz thwarted his attempt and Leclerc set the best time of the weekend 1’11,864.

Perez took second place and also went under 12 seconds. Hamilton complained about the failed heating of the rear tire.

Ricciardo improved and returned to the top 10, and Norris improved to take fourth place ahead of Verstappen. Tsunoda placed seventh and pushed Ricciard back into the elimination zone.

Russell improved to sixth place, Magnussen finished tenth and Schumacher was thirteenth. Hamilton and Vettel returned to the top 10, as did Ocon in sixth place. Bottas improved, but it wasn’t enough.

Tsunoda, Bottas, Magnussen, Ricciardo and Schumacher were eliminated.

Q3 – 12 minutes

Leclerc had a very good time in his first attempt for 1’11 “376. Sainz took second place for 1’11” 601, ahead of Pérez for 1’11 “629 and Verstappen for 1’11” 666.

Norris settled in fifth place, eight-tenths behind the riders ahead. Hamilton, Russell and Vettel placed sixth and eighth, and the alpine F1 drivers were shaky on their fast bike.

Alonso set the fifth fastest time, two tenths ahead of Norris! Very good performance for an alpine rider, while on the Ocon side the bike was less convincing with tenth place.

Pérez and Verstappen made a second attempt in the middle of training, certainly on worn rubber, and both were late. Norris improved, reaching two tenths from the Dutch and finishing fifth.

Russell also overtook Alonso, as all the riders raced for another attempt. Leclerc set the absolute best time in the first sector!

Perez turned on the doorman at the entrance to the tunnel and crashed into the wall from behind before Sainz crashed into Red Bull number 11. The track was blocked and Alonso hit Mirabeau.

The session therefore ended in absolute chaos, which allowed Leclerc to enjoy his fifth pole position of the season, second at home! He is ahead of Sainz, Pérez and Verstappen.

Norris and Russell form a purely British third line, ahead of Alons and Hamilton, then Vettel and Ocon.
