As summer approaches, many of us try to lose the extra pounds we have gained since the beginning of the year. Mindfulness techniques help us get rid of excess pounds.
Studies confirm that careful eating can help maintain a healthy weight. According to anecdotal evidence and some existing research, mindfulness techniques can help a person maintain or improve physical and mental well-being.
Mindfulness: being fully present at the moment
For example, mindfulness can reduce anxiety symptoms, improve cognitive function, and even improve the immune response. The principle of mindfulness is very simple: It is about being fully present in a given moment, focusing your attention on external stimuli and their effects on the body and mind, and at the same time learning to recognize and reject unnecessary thoughts. Thus, learning mindfulness techniques can help us alleviate the effects of stress and find more pleasure from current experiences.
Researchers have suggested that mindfulness can also help a person in their weight loss efforts. A study by the University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire National Health in the United Kingdom in collaboration with other clinical and research institutions actually confirms these and similar results.
This research is important because it shows that problematic eating behavior can be improved by applying mindfulness. The research team published their findings in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, a publication of the Endocrine Society.
Make appropriate lifestyle decisions
The research team worked with 53 people who participated in a specialized weight management program at the University Hospitals in Coventry and Warwickshire National Health.
Of the participants, 33 participated in at least three of the four mindfulness training courses that taught them to practice mindfulness while eating.
Over the next six months, participants who completed three or four mindfulness sessions lost an average of 3 kilograms, while those who participated in only one or two mindfulness sessions lost an average of 0.9 kilograms.
In addition, compared to a control group of 20 participants who underwent the same weight management program but without mindfulness lessons, those who underwent comprehensive mindfulness training lost an average of 2.85 kilograms.
Mindfulness: a better relationship with food
Surveys among participants suggest that mindfulness training can help this population improve its relationship to food. Mindfulness can help people change and manage their eating behavior more easily. People who attended the course said they were better able to plan meals in advance and felt more confident that they would manage their weight loss themselves in the future.
Weight loss meditation: an easily accessible technique for everyone
Mindfulness training can be organized in centers and provided by certified trainers or even developed using digital tools.
This approach can be easily extended to large populations. Mindfulness has huge potential as a strategy for achieving and maintaining good health and well-being
The application of mindfulness in the level 3 obesity service improves eating behavior and facilitates successful weight loss
