The meeting was rectified and Maserati kept its promise. The Italian luxury car manufacturer officially introduces the Maserati MC20 Cielo, a convertible version of the MC20. The grand car, which was inaugurated in 2020, is now equipped with a retractable electric glass roof, 90.9 centimeters long and 61.5 centimeters wide, and can drop the roof at the driver’s request. And according to Maserati, the integration of this device weighs only 65 kilograms. Its total weight is set at 1,540 kilograms.

Equipped with a carbon fiber monococo chassis, this MC20 Cielo retains a design close to the MC20. The car still has a scissor door and is now offered with a brand new body color called the Acquamarina. A decal with the Maserati logo was inserted on the polycarbonate engine compartment. New diamond-cut alloy rims as well as carbon fiber rims are also available on this Maserati MC20 Cielo.

The roof opens and closes in twelve seconds

To control this supercar with hair in the wind, simply pressing the central touch screen launches the roof opening system.

According to Maserati, opening and closing takes only “twelve seconds”. The retractable roof contains electrochromic glass. Thanks to this and liquid crystal technology, the closed roof can change from transparent to opaque black.

According to Maserati, the roof guarantees “perfect thermal insulation and respectful sound insulation”.

The aerodynamics have been reworked

When you add a retractable roof to your car, the car’s aerodynamics inevitably change.

Maserati therefore relocated the air intake vents in the engine compartment, added boomerang-shaped cutouts at the ends of the wheel arches, and even installed rear air intake vents with deflectors.

In the words of the Modena brand, “high aerodynamic performance” is not endangered.

Still powered by a twin-turbo V6

The MC20 Cielo engine installed in the rear central position is identical to the Maserati MC20 engine with a hard roof.

This is a V6 3.0 biturbo Nettuno that still develops 630 hp and 730 Nm of torque. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h is achieved in “about three seconds”, according to the trident company, which also claims that the car can exceed 320 km / h.

The engine is connected to an eight-speed dual-clutch DCT automatic transmission.

Note that by 2025, the MC20 should be offered with a 100% electric motor.

Inside the MC20 Cielo cab, the layout is similar to the MC20, with two 10-inch screens, including a touch screen dedicated to the infotainment system.

A driving mode selector is installed in the center tunnel, while the seats have Ghiaccio leather upholstery.

Carbon fiber was also used on the center console and steering wheel. Parts of the latter are made of Alcantara. Paddles are available on the steering wheel for easy gear shifting.

Limited edition to celebrate the launch

To celebrate the launch of the MC20 Cielo, Maserati is offering a car in a special series called PrimaSerie Launch Edition. This exclusive edition, limited to sixty copies, features the Acquamarina body color, 20-inch matte black rims in white gold, the PrimaSerie logo on the same rims, as well as emblems in several places on the body. The interior upholstery “combines Alcantara with light Ice leather with contrasting Acquamarina stitching”, as Maserati explains, stating that the PrimaSerie name is located on the head restraints.

The exact release date of the Maserati MC20 Cielo is not known at the time of writing, but we already know that a supercar convertible costs from EUR 265,400. Or EUR 45 400 more than the coupe model, as well.

In a nutshell

It still stands on a carbon fiber monocoque chassis, it is still powered by a 630 hp biturbo V6, it is still able to exceed 320 km / h. However, this Maserati MC20 differs from the model that the trident company launched in 2020. This variant, called the MC20 Cielo, is truly a convertible version of the MC20. For this occasion, the Italian supercar gets a retractable hardtop that opens and closes in twelve seconds. And thanks to the use of electrochromic glass, the roof can be transparent or opaque when closed. The price of this MC20 Cielo is not known at the time of writing.
