MG ZS EV Extended Range Test: The Clean Automobile Supertest

To get a better place, MG ZS EV comes in a more versatile redesigned version with Extended Autonomy.

Supertest, what is it? This is a new test format on that tracks the first impressions gained during the initial manipulation. This is a deepening worthy of the greatest speleologists, carried out over much longer distances and always on the same route according to a very precise protocol, which is designed to be repeated with each novelty. We started this exercise with plug-in hybrids and now we are also applying the evolution dedicated to the electric ones. Target? Gather comprehensive information from a long-term test in real conditions!

Supertests of electric cars
our complete test protocol

Launched in 2020, the EV EV is the first conquest weapon from MG, an English manufacturer, that has now passed the Chinese standard. For the European solution, the manufacturer chose a city SUV, unfortunately equipped with a battery and the autonomy of a city car. It is undergoing a major update just two years after its arrival.

About downloading software that would only improve its autonomy, but it is out of the question: ZS EV will change everything or almost. This will go through his face, now more enticing, but also several technical innovations that finally allow him to have versatility at the top of his segment. And this is especially the case with this trial version of Extended Autonomy, which will undoubtedly account for the vast majority of sales.

Introducing MG ZS EV

ZS EV technology

MG ZS EV, which was previously available in a single version, now offers two options, p 51 kWh or 70 kWh battery. The latter is equipped with a version of Extended Autonomy. With Nickel Cobalt Manganese technology and supplied by CATL, he comes from MG Marvel R, the big brother of ZS EV. That now allows him to argue range 440 kmwhich is still 177 km better than before!

Nevertheless, this unit is limited in power and slows down engine cavalry. In this top version, it reports a mechanism installed on the front axle 156 hp and 280 Nm torque compared to 177 kv basic version. But despite less power and more weight, it can display the same power values with 0 per 100 km / h in 8.6 s and a maximum speed of 175 km / h.

On the charging side, the new ZS EV is equipped with an on-board charger as standard 11 kW AC. The new battery promises to peak on 92 kW DC power at fast charging stations. According to the brochure, he can perform exercises 5 to 80% in 40 minutes. Due to its extended autonomy, it should therefore be slightly more robust over long distances.

All our consumption measurements MG ZS EV

Mixed autonomy: 364 km

As usual, we start with a workshop on mixed autonomy measurements with a temperature of 10 ° C. Exercise where MG ZS EV has the opportunity to present further developments on the road. Because this restyling doesn’t just focus on its electrical and mechanical equipment: the SUV gets structural modifications to the bow that give it a completely different face. However, if the line is still silent, it is more reactive. Adherence to the course seems to be strict, as is the balance, which is always reassuring for family use.

If the speed limits are strictly adhered to, the SUV does not take long and shows a completely different side: consumption. At the end of this 100 km track (twice 50 km in one direction and then in the other), the IB appeared on average 19.9 kWh / 100 km. This affects its battery capacity and mixed autonomy 351 km. Relatively correct score, with a good mention on a winding road, where he showed an average of 18.6 kWh / 100 km.

Road vs. Highway: He doesn’t like speed

Among other technical improvements, MG ZS receives EV new synchronous motor with permanent magnetsagainst previously wound rotor technology. According to the manufacturer, it is more powerful by about 1% to 4%, while the rotation speed has been increased to 15,000 rpm. And on our favorable national road, efficiency does exist: at the end of these 50 km (at an average speed of 57 km / h), the SUV had a consumption of 14 kWh / 100. This corresponds to an impressive total autonomy of 499 km!

On the other hand, the improvement will not help on the motorway (average 120 km / h), where he completed 50 km of expressway with an appetite of 26.9 kWh / 100 km, or 259 km of autonomy. That’s almost twice as much as on the road and roughly corresponds to what we’ve seen on the long journey.

Immediate consumption MG ZS EV

If consumption is at a high average, IB continues to prove that it does not like to drive fast. This is also confirmed by our test of consumption at stabilized speed. At 110 km / h it consumes 21.5 kWh / 100 km compared to 27.8 kWh / 100 km at 130 km / h. With a difference of only 20 km / h, the appetite manages to climb by 29.3%, which is a very high value.

Still, according to purely theoretical projections, this corresponds to a difference of 51 km of autonomy to a useful 80% at 10% load. Or even 74 km to a full tank.

Long distance road: 186 km of useful autonomy

With all this information in hand, the MG ZS EV did not bring any surprises on the long-distance road that connects Paris with Lyon on the A6 motorway. On this track, we recorded an average of 26.2 kWh / 100 passes. Predictable result when driving at 130 km / h on the vast majority of the route at an average temperature of 10 ° C.

The total autonomy in this case is 266 km per full tank. At 100% departure, the first connection can be considered 239 km, then count on 186 km between the two stations on the highway. This remains on average for the two compacts we have already examined, but autonomy is not the only parameter to consider, as we will see in the second part of this Supertest.

Comfort and performance MG ZS EV

The interior of MS ZS EV does not require as many modifications as the outer dress can suggest. The design is preserved, as well as very good quality workmanship, which is nothing to envy European standards. Especially since it now gets fully digital instrumentation, an induction charger, automatic air conditioning and a central 10.1-inch touch screen with more attractive graphics and significantly higher speeds. Note that not everything can be perfect with a steering wheel that is only height-adjustable, unlike a passenger seat, which is only adjustable in length, or with perfect support for the backrest arms.

This is not enough to reduce road comfort, but the SUV has a very good level of filtration. Only on deformations does it admit its limits, deafening impacts come from the rear suspension on the worst bearing or the front axle, which is guided by venting. So many faults that we do not encounter on the highway, where it absorbs aerodynamic noise. Despite the engineers’ efforts to soundproof the lower parts, rolling noise is present, while the passenger compartment is surrounded by aerodynamic noise. However, our sound level meter does not panic and gives average values, maximum 75 dB at 130 km / h.

In the power department of the IB reports 0-100 km / h in 8.6 s and we measured 80-120 km / h in 6.30 s at 80% load in mode Normal. We did not expect a better SUV with an unfavorable weight / power ratio of 10.38 kg / hp, according to the technical sheet. However, if it keeps this time to 20% load, overtaking below will be much more difficult with a recovery of 9.80 s at 10% load. Nothing surprising in itself, but it doesn’t try to alert the driver to the remaining energy when discharging the battery, as is the case with the Volkswagen ID.3.

MG ZS EV Supertest: results

Forget the decent copy of the previous version, which was able to talk thanks to the aggressive selling price. The new MG ZS EV appears to be a new generation vehicle. He also brings mechanical equipment to his revised plastic, which now allows him to leave cities without thinking. All this without affecting the quality of its interior or the volume of the suitcase 488 l. And to better confirm that versatility was one of its specifications for this restyling, it comes with a towing capacity of 500 kg and a recharging function (which we could not test due to missing adapter) and another electric car on hand).

So here is a proposal that deserves our attention, at least at a strict level of governance and autonomy. Whether it will pass the test of travel and fast charging times remains to be seen. Meanwhile, Hyundai Kona Electric, with whom it shares a face without a grid, has something to tickle. Surely a Korean can sleep in his two mirrors in terms of efficiency. But on the balance of tariffs, the IB is shown in the total amount of 38,490 EUR (without bonuses), while the network of dealers tends to develop.

What is Supertest?

Lovers of numbers and allergy to official data sheets is like Supertest, the new Automobile-Propre test format, which combines data collected during the test in real conditions and according to a transparent and accurate protocol. We will add them to our summary article on Wednesday after the release of the second part dedicated to MG ZS EV Extended Range allows you to compare the values recorded for the tested models, which will have the entire value of the title.
