But it wasn’t easy for Gottlieb Daimler. After inventing one of the first gasoline engines with Wilhelm Maybach in 1883, he founded his company Daimler Motoren Gesellschaf in 1890 near Stuttgart. He feared it was outvoted by shareholders and the left in 1893. suffers from a heart attack.

A year earlier, Daimler had met a certain Frederick Simms, who had shown great interest in the engine invented by the German. In 1890 he bought the rights for the British Empire with the exception of Canada, and in 1893 Daimler created the Motor Syndicate, which was designed to make motor vehicles, ships rather than automobiles.

why? Because at that time, across the English Channel, they were subjected to such traffic restrictions (they must not drive faster than a person walking, ie 4 mph) that their industry could not flourish.

These stupid limits (like what, they don’t come from yesterday) were lifted in 1896 and the car can evolve into Perfidious Albion.

Another thief enters the scene: HJ Lawson, head of the British Motor Syndicate, who takes over the British activities of Daimler and in 1896 founds the Daimler Motor Company. So Daimler also became a car manufacturer in England.

After a hesitant start, it was bought in 1910 by BSA (a famous motorcycle manufacturer) and sold in 1960 by Daimler Jaguar. Jaguar did not meet this competitor very favorably and produced an excellent V8 (in 2.5 l and 4.5 l), perfectly able to show off its famous 6-cylinder XK.

Nevertheless, it will be fitted to Daimler’s version of its Mk II sedan, redesignated the V8 250 for the occasion. Then in 1969 it eliminates this very good engine (while it is unable to develop its own V8).

The Daimler brand will only be used to designate the more luxurious Jaguars, its only specific car remains the intimate DS420 sedan (based on 420G), widely used by the British royal family. This coat of arms will be withdrawn in 2010.
