After four years of absence, Citroën has made every effort to return to the category of large touring cars and has developed an unprecedented strategy. Its first pillar was not to restore another conventional tribox. As a result, his stunning C5 X floats between the worlds of the sedan and the adventurer’s station wagon. Long (4.81 m), taller than average and revealing a spectacular stern, the new Chevron is proving unclassifiable at the moment.. But more than a silhouette, this descendant of the C5 and C6 is above all an impressive travel machine.

What do the French think of the new C5 X?

In an interior less original than its body, the French car got extremely good. Huge space, well-designed front seats and benches, easy-to-understand ergonomics, as it still leaves plenty of room for physical controls so you feel comfortable quickly. And the C5 X transforms the test by offering stunning cushioning comfort without falling into the cartoon gum. Driving enthusiasts will not get their luck, but it is necessary to underline the unexpected dynamics of this big sedan, which is doing better than its brother C5 Aircross, for example. The only weak spot, the materials are not always with the height of the road category, although the assembly remains serious. And then Citroën knows how to forgive with competitive prices. In the middle of this flattering picture, the right engine remains to be dug.

Not a clumsy plug-in hybrid

If you are interested in a Citroën sedan, know that the selection will be quick, as the selection is surprisingly limited. Although diesel would be a perfect fit for this mileage, Chevrons bet they could do without it.. It is therefore necessary to make your market between the PureTech 130, PureTech 180 and the rechargeable hybrid with 225 horsepower. At the latter, Citroën is not very well ahead of the competition. Electrical autonomy does not apply, but it is sufficient if you live about twenty kilometers from your workplace to be able to complete the return journey. Or, better, recharge once in the office… Especially since this “plug-in” is 300 kg overweight compared to the PureTech and does not consume much more and shows good performance in terms of grip and acceleration.. However, its price obviously remains high: at least € 44,950 in the medium Feel Pack version, from which you must withdraw € 1,000 in bonuses valid until 30 June.

Two PureTechs, two atmospheres

If you do not have access to a charging point at home or at work, the PureTech 130 and 180 will suit you much better. Despite its modest performance, the smallest PureTech may be enough for the C5 X.. If the feelings of acceleration are not exactly thunderous, our time confirms that the small 3-cylinder 1.2 turbo 130 horsepower is doing with honor, especially because the French withstand their weight (1,460 kg). Above all, it makes it possible to reduce the price of a Citroën road car and opt, if not for the rather cheap Feel finish, for the Feel Pack for EUR 35 400 and a small fine of EUR 210.

But if you can afford it, the PureTech 180 is much better suited to the C5 X. On the one hand, there is a more convenient power reserve for overtaking, especially when the car is loaded, but this 4-cylinder 1.6 turbo is especially suitable for its smooth running and quietness in the acceleration phases, where the PureTech 130 shows this scraping side and this sound is typical of its architecture, but it meets under the hood of a grand tourer. More powerful and with more torque, the PureTech 180 is not more voracious, on the contrary. So it is he who gains our favor, regardless of price. Because it will cost you at least 40,500 EUR, because this engine is only available in the Shine version.
