Samsung: The advertisement for its 200MP photo sensor demonstrates its futility

Samsung has decided to do a great demonstration of its 200-megapixel Isocell photo sensor. Two-way advertising.

To follow the megapixel race popular with Chinese manufacturers, Samsung introduced its first 200-megapixel Isocell HP1 photo sensor in 2021. Defining a record for a sensor that should eventually be in smartphones. On May 26, 2022, the brand published an advertisement for the sale of the capabilities of this photosensor. An impressive show, but a little counterproductive when you think about it.

Photo 616 m²

The ad shows the backstage of a giant poster. The photographer uses Samsung’s 200 megapixel Isocell HP1 sensor to capture a very cute cat. The teams will then take care of printing the photo on a 28 x 22 poster, ie 616 m2.

It’s a really impressive technological feat. We are now able to capture 200 million pixels on a small photo sensor. But what does this ad really reveal besides demonstrations?

What is the use of such a sensor?

In fact, the hollow video suggests that a giant poster must be printed to get the most out of this 200-megapixel sensor. Since the beginnings of digital photography, increasing the definition of sensors has made it possible, in particular, to improve the possible size of photo prints. It is clear that we have now far exceeded the needs of all.

In addition, Samsung never gives exact details about capturing this photo. We know that in photography, the sensor is not everything, it is just a link in a large chain. To create a photo capable of printing at such a size, we suspect that the brand did not use a simple lens that can be integrated into a smartphone.

Samsung further states that “All images shown are for illustrative purposes only and may not accurately depict the product or images captured with the product. All images are digitally edited, modified or enhanced“Attention, this is something completely classic in advertising. This kind of mention can be found under all ads for smartphones that want to sell their photographic skills.

Obviously, increasing the definition of a photo sensor can be helpful. We are thinking in particular of the possibility of cropping part of the photo without losing data or increasing the amount of information that photo processing software can use. With a 200 megapixel sensor, Samsung also wants to improve 8K video recording.

So it’s not really this advertisement that can convince us of the need for a 200-megapixel sensor in a smartphone. Nevertheless, taking a picture of a cat and exposing it to 616 m2 is a sure bet. Undoubtedly the best idea for this ad. 😺
