Brucellosis is a disease of small and large animals, such as sheep, goats, cattle and buffaloes, that eat grass. This bacterium; It is transmitted to humans through direct contact with infected animals, raw meat, unpasteurized dairy products and respiration. There are also types of dogs and pigs per person. There is no human-to-human transmission. Farmers, veterinarians and slaughterhouse workers are at risk. The most common route of transmission is cheese and cream from raw milk. Due to the fact that milk is boiled during the production of yoghurt and yoghurt yeast is added to it, the disease is not transmitted with yoghurt. After entering the body through the gastrointestinal tract, skin and rarely by respiration, the brucella bacteria multiply in the regional lymph nodes, multiply and then spread to all organs of the body. It affects the skin, gastrointestinal system, testes, lungs, brain, heart and blood vessels and causes many different diseases (central nervous system or.
such as heart valve disease). It also settles in the bones and joints.


Brucella, which begins with insidious general symptoms of infection, can be confused with other diseases. High fever with chills and chills causes symptoms of heavy sweating at night. The fever gradually increases every day and reaches 39-40 degrees. Along with fever, muscle and joint pain, enlarged liver and spleen, and extensive swelling of the lymph nodes can occur in the body. The fever, which lasts up to 10 days, then gradually decreases. The patient thinks he has the flu and is recovering. But after a week, the fever is rising again. This fluctuating course of fever can last for months. During this period, diagnostics are performed using the Wright test.


Brucella is more common in developing countries. It is known among people as “sheep disease” because it is mostly transmitted from sheep to people in Turkey. Its lethality is low, but its potential to cause disease is high. Every year, thousands of people get this disease in our country. It is common in Turkey, especially in southeastern and central Anatolia. It is more common in summer. Because in these months there are more opportunities to travel to rural areas and make cheese.


There is no safe and effective vaccine against this disease for humans. Safeguards are valuable. Milk and milk products sold in the open air should not be given priority. Meat and dairy products which do not have the information on the label, the source of which is unknown and which are not certain to be produced in safe places, should not be consumed. It is important that the milk is boiled or pasteurized. Cheese and butter should not be made without pasteurized milk. Pickled cheeses should be stored for at least 3 months and soft cheeses should be consumed after at least 6 months. Farmers, slaughterhouse workers, butchers should be trained and should wear gloves and masks. Control and vaccination of brucellosis in animals is important.


Treatment is with concomitant use of some antibiotics for at least 6 weeks. Recurrence can be observed in 20-30% of cases. The disease can sometimes recur after two years.
