Many people may not know this, but the Opel Grandland X is the stepbrother of the Peugeot 3008, engines and technology) with the Sochaux model. The Grandland X was also the first model born of the alliance between Opel and the PSA group, now Stellantis. However, even if the recipe is the same, the success between the two models is far from different. So if 3008 remains the best-selling compact SUV in France with more than 50,000 units in 2021, the situation is much less flattering for the Opel model, which sold only 4,000 units, or 10 times less. Although this observation is not the same in Europe, Peugeot’s dominance is undeniable on a larger scale.
Although the success of this model did not live up to expectations, Opel used four years of Grandland’s existence to redesign it. If any restyling can go almost unnoticed, it is very far from Grandland. Opel used the means and this is evident because it was influenced by the exterior design, interior presentation and technology. Even the name was changed because Grandland lost X, which was appended to his last name.
The front has changed with the advent of Vizor, a new brand identity that consists of a full radiator grille that extends to the level of the headlights.
In terms of appearance, just like the brand’s latest models (Mokka, Crossland and Astra) it adopts a new brand identity: Vizor, which consists of a closed black front with a chrome-plated outline with a grid in optical continuity. The latter can take advantage of Matrix LED technology. The rocker arms and wheel arches are now in body color, while the front bumper has been redesigned. Fewer rear changes except for the Grandland monogram, which is now in the middle of the trunk door in capital letters. Finally, it is possible to choose a two-color color, as in our test model, which had a black package consisting of a roof, rockers and rims.
The changes are even more spectacular on board, as Grandland has left its screens to adopt a new presentation called the “Pure Panel” consisting of 12-inch digital equipment and a 10-inch touch screen connected by glass. The modernization is undeniable and also applies to the transition to a higher level, but we will criticize – as with other models of the brand, too simplified presentation of instrumentation and basic quality of navigation graphics receding compared to what is currently happening on the market.
Habitat and load capacity are one of the strengths of this Grandland.
Practically, nothing changes with a good loading volume of 514 liters and an interesting living stern, although the central location is a bit handicapped by an impressive center console.
The Grandland hides the familiar engines under the hood, as they are the same as the PSA models. Today, it is the only gasoline block available that passes through our hands. This engine is well known because it is equipped with many Stellantis vehicles. As a reminder, this is a three-cylinder engine with a capacity of 1.2 liters, which develops 130 hp and has a torque of 230 Nm, which can be combined with a manual or automatic transmission. This engine, which is more pleasant on a daily basis with tonic dialing, allows Grandland to declare a certain dynamic, which it does not hesitate to do because of the convincing part of the chassis, which resembles its relationship with the Peugeot 3008. Although slightly less than its lion cousin, Grandland gives us very pleasant score with an excellent compromise between comfort and dynamics. Someone who criticizes the unnatural driving position for a small steering wheel will be satisfied with the Grandland, which has a full-fledged steering wheel.
Unfortunately, this engine does not only have qualities and we can only rebuke its slightly too present sound in the stages of acceleration and above all a considerable appetite. In our test, we therefore recorded an average of 8.5 l / 100 km. More than average result. Finally, to complete the budget issue, with 145 g / Co2 emissions, we will have to deal with a fine of EUR 540 for our trial version.
