Launched at the end of 2020, the iX3 was developed with the best of the BMW Group’s electrical technology. An electric motor with an output of 286 hp, a lithium-ion battery with a gross capacity of 80 kWh (with a 30% increase in density at the time) and a fast charging system of up to 150 kW, all implanted in the X3 frame and mainly sold below € 70,000, ie about € 10,000 less than the competition, Mercedes EQC and Audi e-Tron, definitely more powerful. Since then, competition has grown and “democratized”, especially for Tesla and its Model Y.

For simplicity, the iX3 is an X3 with an electric motor inside. But the reality is a little more complicated, because the iX3 is made in China, while the freshly redesigned X3 is made in the United States. BMW has simply synchronized the life cycles of its two models to align its offerings. Engine, battery and capacity are not evolving. The changes are therefore purely cosmetic.

The changes are mainly on the bow with slightly larger “beans” and thinner lights, which are now adaptive as standard (Laser on request). At the back, the shield offers more relief, while the lights have a 3D pinhead design. Without forgetting the tiny blue tones placed everywhere to signal the ecological pedigree of the SUV.

On board the IX3, he sees a larger multimedia screen (12.3 inches) equipped with Android and Carplay connectivity. The start button, also blue, also moved to the center console as the gear lever went through a small facelift. These changes are slight, that’s a fact, but the impression of quality is present despite the fact that the iX3 is made in China.

The integration of the battery into the base allows you to maintain habitability with a large legroom, but only for two passengers. The transmission tunnel of the thermal versions is present and obstructs the footwell of the middle seat. The IX3 is not the most populous on the market, but it remains a good family vehicle with plenty of luggage space for a family of 4. It reaches a base of 510 liters and has storage space under the floor for charging cables.
